There’s something about spring that just makes you want to get outside, isn’t there?
For me, it’s that first run where you realise you don’t need the winter layers anymore. The sun is shining, the flowers are starting to bloom, and you can hear the birds in the background, it’s a completely different feeling. You just can’t beat it.
If you’ve been thinking about starting running, or getting back into it after winter, now really is the perfect time.
Why Spring is the Best Time to Start Running
After the darker, colder months, spring feels like a reset. The lighter evenings make it easier to find motivation to fit a run into your day, the milder temperatures mean it’s far more enjoyable than battling freezing mornings or being way too hot in the summer.
Running in spring isn’t just about fitness, it’s about how it makes you feel. A bit of fresh air, a change of scenery, and some time to yourself can make such a difference.
New to Running? Keep It Simple
If you’re just starting out, my biggest piece of advice is: don’t overthink it.
You don’t need to run far, fast, or perfectly. A mix of walking and running is absolutely fine, in fact, it’s one of the best ways to begin. It’s all about building confidence and getting comfortable.
Just getting out the door is a win!
Getting Back Into Running After Winter
If winter knocked your routine a bit (it happens to all of us), you’re not alone.
The key is to ease back in. Start with shorter runs, take the pressure off, and let your body find its rhythm again. It comes back quicker than you think.
And honestly, it’s a lot more enjoyable doing it in spring than in the middle of January!
Running for the Joy of It
For me, running has never been about being the fastest, it’s about enjoying the moment.
A big part of that is running with Merlot.
There’s something so special about heading out together. No pressure, no expectations, just fresh air, a bit of movement, and a very happy dog by your side. It makes you slow down and stop, (the toilet stops can be a welcome relief) take it all in, and actually enjoy the run for what it is.
If you’ve got a dog and you’ve ever thought about running with them, give it a go. Start gently, keep it fun, and enjoy the time together.
Set a Goal That Works for You
Having a goal can really help with motivation, but it doesn’t have to be anything big or scary.
It could be:
- Running for 10 minutes without stopping
- Getting out twice a week
- Signing up for your first 5K
Make it something that feels achievable and enjoyable for you.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
One of the things I love most about running is the community around it.
Through the races, being a member of Desborough & Rothwell Running Club and being a leader in runner, I’ve seen so many people start their journey, build confidence, and realise they’re capable of more than they thought, all in a really supportive, friendly environment.
It’s never about being the fastest. It’s about showing up, giving it a go, and enjoying the experience.
Ready to Start?
If you’ve been waiting for the right time, this is it.
Spring is here, the conditions are perfect, and there’s no better feeling than getting outside and moving.
Take it at your own pace, enjoy the fresh air, and most importantly enjoy every step of it.
Welcome to the world of running 😊
